Prepare the cheese mixture:
In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, and fresh basil (if using). Mix until smooth and well-combined. Set aside.
Assemble the lasagna:
In a 9×13-inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom.
Place 3 lasagna noodles on top of the sauce. Spread a portion of the cheese mixture over the noodles, followed by a layer of meat sauce. Repeat the layering process until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of meat sauce on top.
Top and bake:
Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese over the top layer of meat sauce.
Cover the lasagna with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
Let it rest:
Remove from the oven and let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
